NYT: A Movie’s Budget Pops From the Screen

REPORT: Can a movie studio make money on a film based on an original and unfamiliar story, with no Hollywood superstars, a vanishing DVD market and a price tag approaching $500 million?

That question looms large for 20th Century Fox and its 3-D science-fiction film “Avatar,” among the most expensive movies ever. Despite many skeptics, the studio thinks it can turn a profit, in part because the film’s creator, James Cameron, was the driving force behind the studio’s immense hit “Titanic.”

But just in case box-office receipts for “Avatar” fall short, Fox has worked hard to hedge its large bet on the movie.

Despite the estimated half-billion dollars spent on its production and marketing, “Avatar” may carry surprisingly little financial risk for Fox’s parent company, the News Corporation, even if it disappoints. That is because of shifting industry economics, reliance on outside investors and help from a network of allied companies and in-house business units.

Fox’s efforts underscore how studios generally have been able to minimize their exposure at a time of blockbuster budgets — albeit at the cost of limiting their profit potential as well.

The final cost of the film has not been tallied, as Mr. Cameron, who has worked on the film for 15 years, and his collaborators, as far-flung as Weta Digital in New Zealand, continue to complete their work. Published reports have put the production budget at more than $230 million.

But the price tag would be higher if the financial contribution of Mr. Cameron and others were included. When global marketing expenses are added, “Avatar” may cost its various backers $500 million.

Got an idea.....

For a while now I been thinking on how to do the new Critic Corner Awards show. Maybe I should have fans cast their votes for my nominees or have them pick the nominees this year.

Hmm.

I'm even considering another contest.

What do you think?

Men in Black 3?

REPORT: The men in black are massing.

Sony Pictures is moving forward on "MIB 3," the third movie in its sci-comedy franchise.

"Tropic Thunder" writer Etan Cohen is penning the script, and Barry Sonnenfeld, who directed the first two films, is said to be attached to the new installment, though there is no formal deal or offer as yet.

The studio is eyeing a 2010 start date for the production.

The X factor remains Will Smith. The A-lister, who starred with Tommy Lee Jones in the first two "Men in Black" films, has not committed to the project, though in recent days the buzz in development circles has been that he is interested in returning. Smith does not have a pending movie project lined up.

Jones' involvement is uncertain.

Where The Wild Things Are (Review Date: October 19, 2009)

Massive undertaking . . . ?

As you all know I'm a very busy guy. I've had little time to devote to this blog, but I managed to update a few things especially the archives, dead links, etc. Well, there seems to only be about 70 days left in the year. I do have some plans up my sleeves that will make my long nights longer . . .

There is a book I have been working on for The Critic Corner. A part of me wants to complete it by year's end.

Another part of me wants to do another contest but this time just for fun! If I do pull this off it'll be in time for the Christmas season.

I'm aiming to hold the 4th Annual Critic Corner Awards by January 1, 2010 . . . .

Lastly, there's a major revamp in store for my newsletter. I'm not going to get into any details yet but I will tease that's its the biggest announcement of the year.

Well, that's it for this announcement. Its a big one, I know. Can I effectively pull this off?

AFP: "Titanic" producer fearless over latest movie

REPORT: Hollywood producer Jon Landau said Friday he had no doubt that his latest feature with "Titanic" director James Cameron would live up to its billing as the year's most-anticipated film.

The 300-million-dollar "Avatar", packed with computer-generated imagery and 3-D effects, is the pair's first project together since scooping 11 Oscars with "Titanic" in 1998.

"Any fear about this film is long behind us," Landau said on the sidelines of the 14th Pusan International Film Festival in South Korea, after screening 30-minutes of selected scenes from the film.

"When we started it was a little like the people at NASA who first went to the moon," he said.

"When John Kennedy said they were going to put someone on the moon, they didn't really know how they were going to do it and when we started we had an idea but we had no idea how we were going to do it either."

Landau and Cameron have spent the past four-and-a-half years putting the new film together, promising a combination of computer-generated imagery, 3-D effects and live action, the likes of which the world has never seen.

The pair seem to be on the money -- just as they were with "Titanic", which despite doubts from initial test screenings and critics went on to gross close to two billion dollars worldwide, making it the all-time box office champion.

"Avatar" follows the exploits of paraplegic army veteran who is taken to another world where his genes are mixed with those of an alien creature -- the new being becoming the "avatar" of the film's title.

"The excitement for me is that we are finally going to be able to show something that we have been working on for four-and-a-half years. Because a film is nothing if no one sees it," said Landau.

"No single movie can revolutionise the movie industry but one film can be a step in the evolution of movies. What we think we are doing here is unlocking the door for more filmmakers to tell more stories."

"Avatar" is set for its worldwide release on December 18th.

Patrick Swayze dies at 57

REPORT: Patrick Swayze, the hunky actor who danced his way into moviegoers' hearts with "Dirty Dancing" and then broke them with "Ghost," died Monday after a battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 57.

"Patrick Swayze passed away peacefully today with family at his side after facing the challenges of his illness for the last 20 months," his publicist, Annett Wolf, said in a statement Monday evening. Swayze died in Los Angeles, Wolf said, but she declined to give further details.

Fans of the actor were saddened to learn in March 2008 that Swayze was suffering from a particularly deadly form of cancer. He kept working despite the diagnosis, putting together a memoir with his wife and shooting "The Beast," an A&E drama series for which he had already made the pilot.

Swayze said he opted not to use painkilling drugs while making "The Beast" because they would have taken the edge off his performance. The show drew a respectable 1.3 million viewers when the 13 episodes ran in 2009, but A&E said it had reluctantly decided not to renew it for a second season.

Leaving on Vacation

What difference will it make? I'm leaving for Taiwan this weekend, but I've hardly updated anything because of a lousy movie season. I am interested in DISTRICT 9 and INGLORIOUS BASTERDS so maybe there's a chance for future reviews.

Either way, I'm out for two weeks. The NFL season will begin when I return which means less movie-watching for me.

Until then, please explore my blog! There are trailers, clips, news, podcasts, etc all for your enjoyment. Of course, there are plenty of reviews here too in case you're wondering what to rent for that one movie night at home ;)

The Mercury Men Trailer!

From the team that brought you Captain Blasto comes an original sci-fi series! This looks awesome!!!

Tuesday, July 28, 2009

Slow season . . .

The numbers show it. The box office has been declining for at least 3 weeks now. Harry Potter is crashing back to earth and fast. Transformers is all but forgotten. The excellent grade films are showing in a hand-full of screens. A lot is riding on G.I. JOE but its tracking to be a terrible film too.

So there's been nothing major for me to report so I've taken time to go back and revist the world of The Watchmen. The Director's Cut presents a more solid viewing experience and announcing the Ultimate Edition for the Christmas season. The Director's Cut is at least 24 minutes longer than the theatrical version. The Ultimate Edition might make the film a near 4-hour experience.

Expect a few more articles about the Watchmen in the coming days. Like I said in my podcast, I won't let this movie be forgotten because of a lost opportunity! There is hope for the Watchmen for I watch their back!

E!: Wolverine's Ryan Reynolds Dives In for Deadpool Spinoff

REPORT: It's official: The mutants are taking over Hollywood. And we're not talking about the freaks running the studios.

Following the monster weekend for X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and a day after announcing that a Hugh Jackman-powered sequel is in the works, 20th Century Fox has confirmed to E! News that Jackman's costar Ryan Reynolds will be given his own spinoff and potential franchise-launcher as the Marvel Comics antihero Deadpool.

The 32-year-old Canadian actor, otherwise known as Mr. Scarlett Johansson, will again star as Wade Wilson, a wisecracking, cancer-stricken mercenary who's cured of the disease after undergoing the same Weapon X genetic alteration as Wolverine.

But along with superhuman powers, enhanced strength and self-regenerating healing powers, the slightly unhinged Deadpool can absorb the abilities of dead and captured mutants.

Aside from Deadpool and the Wolverine sequel, Fox is also working on an X-Men spinoff focusing on Ian McKellen's villainous Magneto and another dubbed X-Men: First Class, which is being written by The O.C. creator Josh Schwartz.

VARIETY: Fox fired up over 'Wolverine' review

REPORT: Has longtime Fox News entertainment blogger Roger Friedman been fired? It depends whom you ask.

On Saturday News Corp. released a statement saying the Hollywood gadfly had been "terminated."

But on Sunday afternoon Friedman told Daily Variety that he had not been let go.

Fox News released its own missive when asked on Sunday afternoon if Friedman had been ousted. "This is an internal matter that we're not prepared to discuss at this time," a Fox News spokesperson said.

For its part, the studio weighed in Friday with its own statement, calling Friedman's actions "reprehensible."

Friedman came under fire for posting a review of a pirated version of 20th Century Fox's "X-Men Origins: Wolverine." Both Fox News and 20th Century Fox are divisions of parent company News Corp.

Friedman posted a review of the film Thursday, one day after an incomplete version of the tentpole was leaked on the Internet, a breach that occurred a month before the film's release and that could potentially cost the studio millions in box office receipts.

After Friedman's positive "Wolverine" review hit the Web, the fanboy blogging community, which had largely called for a boycott of any reviews of the film, immediately lobbied for Friedman's dismissal.

AP: Natasha Richardson dies at 45 after ski accident

REPORT: Natasha Richardson, a gifted and precocious heiress to acting royalty whose career highlights included the film "Patty Hearst" and a Tony-winning performance in a stage revival of "Cabaret," died Wednesday at age 45 after suffering a head injury from a skiing accident.

Alan Nierob, the Los Angeles-based publicist for Richardson's husband Liam Neeson, confirmed her death in a written statement.

"Liam Neeson, his sons, and the entire family are shocked and devastated by the tragic death of their beloved Natasha," the statement said. "They are profoundly grateful for the support, love and prayers of everyone, and ask for privacy during this very difficult time."

The statement did not give details on the cause of death for Richardson, who suffered a head injury when she fell on a beginner's trail during a private ski lesson at the luxury Mont Tremblant ski resort in Quebec. She was hospitalized Tuesday in Montreal and later flown to a hospital in New York City.

Family members had been seen coming and going from the New York hospital where Richardson was reportedly taken.

Vanessa Redgrave, Richardson's mother, arrived in a car with darkened windows and was taken through a garage when she arrived at the Lenox Hill Hospital on Manhattan's Upper East Side at around 5 p.m. Wednesday. An hour earlier, Richardson's sister, Joely, arrived alone and was swarmed by the media as she entered through the back of the hospital.

Spielberg: The Magic Is Long Gone

This is an opinion by John Notle regarding Spielberg.  I agree entirely! -Andres

REPORT: There were two Hollywood-related moments that gladdened the heart over this past weekend. The first, obviously, was the glorious sight of the Oscar telecast end credits, the second was[1] Kim Master’s “Slate” story reporting that Steven Spielberg’s long gestating passion project - an Abe Lincoln biopic, is all but dead. Steven Spielberg not making a film was good news. How things have changed in thirty years.

Anyone my age, anyone who was around ten years-old when “Jaws” hit theatres, remembers when the name “Spielberg” meant something magical. From childhood straight through to my mid-twenties, Spielberg was what the joy of movies was all about. Not only did he direct four of the greatest films in the history of American cinema: “Jaws,” “Close Encounters of the Third Kind,” “Raiders of the Lost Ark” and “E.T.,” but as a producer his name was attached to such crowd pleasers as “Used Cars,” “Poltergeist,” “Gremlins,” “The Goonies,” “Innerspace,” “Who Framed Roger Rabbit,” and the “Back to the Future” trilogy.
To say the least, this was quite a run and then in 1993 he achieved something no other filmmaker of his generation ever came close to. He brought to the screen both the ultimate popcorn thrill-ride with “Jurassic Park” and a full-blown masterpiece with “Schindler’s List.”

At this point Spielberg had nowhere to go but down, and down he went. Whether or not he’s lost a bit of his filmmaking mojo is for another debate. The issue here is one of moral maturity.

The Dark Knight: $1,001,082,160

REPORT: After months of teetering on the brink of $1 billion in worldwide box office revenue, The Dark Knight has officially reached the milestone, distributor Warner Bros. announced today. The Batman sequel is the fourth movie in history to hit the mark, behind Titanic, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest.

Breaking the worldwide gross down, The Dark Knight has made a phenomenal $533.1 million domestically and $468 million overseas. It's the only movie in the Top 20 of the all time worldwide chart where the domestic gross exceeds the foreign gross, which is a common trait among comic book-based pictures. On the all time domestic chart, The Dark Knight ranks second to Titanic, while it stands at No. 22 on the all time foreign chart. Warner Bros. noted that The Dark Knight's total includes the highest-grossing two-dimensional re-mastered IMAX release ever at $49.6 million domestic and $15.3 million overseas.

"The Curse of Potter"?

REPORT: Actors who have worked on the Harry Potter movies believe the films are cursed after a series of tragic deaths and mishaps over the years.

In the latest incident on Wednesday this week, Daniel Radcliffe's stunt double was left badly hurt after a freak accident on set at Leavesden Studios in Watford.

Rob Knox who played the role of Marcus Belby in the yet-to-be-released Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince died after being stabbed in Sidcup in May last year.

Protests against 'Slumdog Millionaire' continue in Bihar capital

REPORT: Slum dwellers in Bihar's capital continued to protest Monday against Oscar-nominated film 'Slumdog Millionaire', demanding the film's makers remove the word dog from the title.

The protesters said their sensibilities had been offended by the title, which they said was abusive of people who live in slums. The protests continued for the second day, even as Republic Day was being celebrated.

A group of slum dwellers protested against the showing of the film at Ashok cinema hall Sunday, while some protesters tore down posters and banners of the film.

The Jhuggi Jhonpdi Sanyukta Sangharsh Samiti (a group promoting the rights of slum dwellers) threatened to burn the film's director Danny Boyle in effigy.

'We will burn Danny Boyle in effigy in 56 slums here,' Tapeshwar Vishwakarma, general secretary of the group said.
